Some things are more than they first appear to be

Lynn Benson - Benson Products

Some things are more than they first appear to be.

My husband and I went on a vacation recently in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. We were fortunate to be able to rent a beautiful lakeside home situated on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. I took this picture the morning after we arrived. It was disappointing to be unable to see the lake from where we were. It was cool and damp and almost drizzly. It was our summer vacation. This was not what we had hoped for. The design of the home with the deck on the lake side promised so much more than we were seeing.

We are used to Michigan so we had clothing to match the weather and we were prepared with alternate plans that did not include the beach. We did our best to enjoy cool temperatures and hikes wearing sweatshirts. This area of the state is also known for its vineyards and wine making and offers a large selection of wine-tasting opportunities which we also enjoyed despite the weather. It was not until late on the next day of the stay that the true character of the vacation home came into view. The cool humid air and clouds cleared away to reveal the absolute splendor of Lake Michigan.

We had warmer temperatures and sunny skies for the next couple of days to truly enjoy all the home had to offer. The bluff the home sits atop is a sand dune that has been stable long enough to have a forest growing up the steep incline. The home owners have constructed a path with many switch-backs to make it possible to find your way to the beach down this very steep bank. We think it might be more than 240 feet nearly straight down from the deck to the shoreline. We were able to watch sailboats and other pleasure boats floating by and from our high perch, we saw cargo ships coming and going throughout the day.

The beauty did not end until well into the night. This deck is one of the best places to be in the late evening. This scene unfolded for a good two hours or more of beauty as the sun sank and then the colors intensified and finally faded slowly into quiet darkness.

If we had only been there long enough to see the deck the way it looked the first day of our stay, we may have thought the place was nice but our impression of it would have been limited by what we could not see.
